  • 演講大綱 Abstract

The history of the kingdom of Patani, on the east coast of the Thai peninsula along the South China Sea, has attracted scholarly interest for nearly two centuries, mostly due to the important economic role played by this kingdom in Asian trade during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Combining fieldwork, study of Portuguese, Dutch, and local sources, including recently discovered Portuguese archival material, this talk will discuss issues relating to the foundation of the sultanate, the organisation of its capital at the beginning of the 17th century, its Muslim tombstones, the reigns of the four queens between late 16th and mid-17th century, and finally its participation in the high seas Asian trade at the time.

Prof. Daniel PERRET

Daniel Perret is a Doctor in History from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, France. Current positions also include Researcher at the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), Head of the EFEO Centre in Kuala Lumpur (1994-1999, and since 2007), and a Visiting Professor at University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.His main area of ​​research is he history of ancient settlement sites in maritime Southeast Asia and, more generally, the history of Sumatra and Malaysia until the end of the 19th century. He conducts excavations as part of multidisciplinary programs and uses written sources (Malay literature, foreign sources), which help shed new light on political entities of various natures. Besides, He is interested in the history of communities originating from South Asia who frequented Southeast Asia, the history of epigraphy in Southeast Asia, as well as the history urban in Malaysia until the first half of the 20th century. Daniel's Research interests also include Archaeology and history of proto-urban and urban sites in Southeast Asia, History of Muslim funerary art in Maritime Southeast Asia, History of South Asian people in Maritime Southeast Asia and History of epigraphic research in Southeast Asia. with several epigraphist colleagues from the National Center for Archaeological Research and Arlo Griffiths, Daniel has been coordinating an inventory of “classic” inscriptions from maritime Southeast Asia since 2002. In November 2011, with the Association of Archaeologists of Malaysia, he organized a workshop in Kuala Lumpur devoted to epigraphy in Southeast Asia. This event led to the publication of a work in 2018 of which he was the scientific editor, a work which aims to be the first real inventory of the discipline.
