"Where is Taiwan's archaeology going?" Career Development Seminar | Session 2: Career Seminar and Experience Sharing by Government and Private Excavation Teams

Activity purpose:

The "Where is Taiwan Archaeology Going?" Career Development Seminar aims to review and discuss the development history and future development direction of Taiwan's archaeological community, with a particular focus on the challenges and opportunities of talent cultivation and career development. In 1992, Mr. Chang Kwang-chih published an article titled "Where is Taiwan Archaeology Going?" in Field Archaeology, proposing four suggestions for talent cultivation and academic development in Taiwan's archaeology at the time: (1) Taiwan archaeology must actively cultivate and absorb talents; (2) Taiwan should be the center of archaeological work, but the research scope should be expanded; (3) Data should be prioritized; and (4) Theoretical diversification, method systematization, and technical internationalization should be adopted. When the industrial structure of archaeology in Taiwan began to change in the 21st century, we faced the challenge of integrating resources from industry, government, academia, and research, as well as the lack of human resources and education and training resources. In addition, the rise of contract archaeology has led to a shift in academic direction, testing the continuation and accumulation of academic energy. Past discussions were limited by time and dialogue objects, making it difficult to have a comprehensive dialogue space. Therefore, this symposium hopes to continue the past dialogue and extend the objects from the current human resources of industry, government, academia, and research to students. Speakers from various career orientations are invited to share their own insights and experiences, and to discuss in depth the talent cultivation and development strategies of the future archaeological community.

This symposium is hosted by the Taiwan and Southeast Asian Archaeology Laboratory of the Institute of History and Philology and co-organized by the Taiwan Archaeological Society . It is divided into three sessions according to three major themes:

(1) Overseas Study Experience: Invite speakers who are currently studying abroad to share their experiences studying abroad, academic life, and the challenges and opportunities they face.

(2) Careers in Government and Private Excavation Teams: Professionals working in government agencies and commercial archaeological companies are invited to share their work models and development prospects, explore how to make full use of archaeological expertise in these agencies and the limitations they face, provide relevant career advice and discuss current challenges.

(3) Academia, Museums, and Education Promotion: Professors and researchers from academia and museums, as well as personnel engaged in education promotion, are invited to share their work experiences, development paths, and career plans, discuss how to achieve success in related fields, and provide relevant career advice and challenges.

We hope that through the above-themed seminars, experts from different generations can share their experiences and insights, promote the inheritance of knowledge and experience, and more closely integrate academic research with practical work, thereby enhancing the overall development of Taiwan's archaeological community.
